"Duration: Fragment" by Craig Dongoski

Meet us at Puritan Mill on Wednesday, September 19 for a sound performance by Craig Dongoski. As an end note to his exhibition Durations at Puritan Mill, Dongoski will perform an interpretation of an enigmatic Takehisa Kosugi graphic score comprised solely of +, – and I symbols. He will be accompanied by Amanda Pepping on trumpet and Matt Rowles on trombone. This is also one of the last opportunities to see Durations at Puritan Mill before the show ends September 30, 2012.

Wendy Given Death Caps and Dark Wood at W+K Gallery

Wendy Given's current exhibition "Death Caps and Dark Wood" at W+K Gallery

Wendy Given's current exhibition "Death Caps and Dark Wood" at W+K Gallery

September 6 – September 27, 2012

Wendy Given‘s second exhibition at WKG, Death Caps and Dark Wood, continues her enchanting production of visceral installations with large scale color photography and multiple sculptures that resonate in the dark and unstable ground between consciousness and collective memory. Given produces work that stems from a profound interest and practice guided by natural philosophy, folklore, myth and magic—”magic” used as a term meant to conjure the notion of the interconnectedness of all life forces.

Observing, documenting and constructing the otherworldly—or seemingly supernatural, ardently fascinates Given. Her contemporary work delves deep into a curious trove that reverberates with a primordial and strangely modern mysticism. With this new exhibition, Given uncannily crosses the fine, delicate line between realism and imagination.

Benita Carr and Matt Haffner  Groundstory at Dalton Gallery

Dalton Gallery

September 28 – November 16, 2012

The Dalton Gallery of Agnes Scott presents “Groundstory: tales from the shade of the South.” The exhibition is organized with support from The Margaret Virginia Philip Art Endowment Fund. “Groundstory” is a gathering of visual artists and writers whose work is rooted to place with a firm foundation in the southeastern United States. They narrate tales, piecing together location, history and experience through nuance and direct narrative. Some shovel stories into grains of a photograph, others lay words like bricks into a poem. They might include objects that reveal where the author comes from, that pose questions like where were they found—were they dug up, and if so, how deeply were they buried? Weather systems might play an important role, from the swell of a flood to a too bright day. Many who spend considerable time in these humid climes are storytellers. Through the land flows their sense of selves. Stories of devotion and death are embedded in raked red earth yards and in houses of peeling paint. In “Groundstory,” the artist’s notion of what a story is expands just like the contradictions of the place.

Tommy Taylor  Shadowland at Institute 193

Day Tripper by Tommy Taylor

"Day Tripper" by Tommy Taylor

September 6 – October 27, 2012

Tommy Taylor’s current exhibition,  Shadowland,  at Institute 193 is an exhibition of new paintings by the Atlanta-based artist. In this body of work, Taylor has arranged imagery gleaned from cartoons, films, and found family photographs into compositions that convey the competing “drives, histories, expectations, and accepted social norms” that characterize modern identity. Taylor’s paintings mine his own personal psychology in an attempt to illustrate how sexuality, religion, and nostalgia can exert contradictory influences on our inner lives. Like a lived experience, his work depicts feuding impulses that have nevertheless been formed into carefully composed arrangements.
