Sarah Emerson’s O Smithereens!, at Whitespace through May 4, explores the fragility of life and early pleasures and builds on her 2018 series Are We the Monsters, seen at Zuckerman Museum of Art in Kennesaw.

The paintings and drawings feature familiar stylized landscapes imploding into darkness and devouring all inhabitants, and feel more feminine. Shades of soft pink and animated drawings of the female body are pronounced, likely a nod to the upswing in national attention to women’s rights.

Paper artist Laura Bell calls attention to vulnerable species

It’s easy to get lost in Laura Bell’s ornate ink and watercolor ecosystems. Bell is fascinated by the fraught interactions between humans and other species. She creates detailed, black-and-white drawings of animals, with a pop of paint to define their natural habitats. Then, she uses tweezers to meticulously apply tiny pieces of Bristol and paper cutouts to create a three-dimensional effect. She said her affinity for working with paper comes from her father, who was a printer.

Matt and Laura, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today. Matt: We met in grad school. I was doing photography and trying to be a conceptual artist. I would see Laura sitting on the fire escape of her studio smoking hand-rolled cigarettes at the end of her day of making work. I was immediately intrigued.

Against the Tide, on view through March 23 at Whitespace Gallery, brings together photography from three artists and SCAD Atlanta professors – Suellen Parker, Sandra-Lee Phipps and V. Elizabeth Turk. The title refers to a common idiom that implies resisting cultural norms. Fittingly, the show runs during Women’s History Month.

The curators’ deft work is most apparent in the smaller gallery, which is quieter and more restrained. In front of a series of black-and-white photographs by Matthew Shain depicting now empty pedestals of Confederate monuments is a grouping of clay pieces by Amy Pleasant. Also muted in tone, her works vaguely recall the figure and might serve as stand-in monuments for the South.(excerpt)

Female artists tackle female form in inspiring exhibition

For centuries, paintings from Titian’s “Venus of Urbino” to Manet’s “Olympia” has pretended to capture women in casual states of undress, seemingly unaware of anyone’s presence as they display their bodies for our delectation. In art, in media, seemingly everywhere, the female body has been a plaything, a novelty, an entertainment, or someone’s political agenda.
